CI 464 – Bilingualism and Literacy in a Second Language

Description: Theoretical foundations of second language acquisition and the teaching of English as second language. Methods and materials for teaching reading and writing in bilingual/ESL settings. Fieldwork required- To be properly registered, students must enroll in one Lecture-Discussion and one Practice.
Prerequisites: Course offered to Graduate ONLY
CI 464 is part of the 5 course sequence leading to the Bilingual/ESL Endorsement. CI 481 – Foundations and Current Issues in Educating English Language Learners, ED 258 – Bilingualism and Cross-Cultural Issues in a Diverse Society, or ED 346 – Sociocritical Foundations of English Learning in Urban Elementary Schools is a prerequisite for registration in this class.
However, we recognize that enrollment in these courses fills up quickly and it is not possible to always begin the course sequence with CI 481, ED 258 or ED 346. Therefore, if you are a certified teacher and have a year or more experience in the classroom, please e-mail the Bilingual/ESL Coordinator, Aria Razfar at arazfar@uic.edu to see if you are eligible to waive this requirement. In the email, please state how long you have been teaching in the classroom.
