Description: The course is designed to provide teachers with an overview of transition for individuals with disabilities. Areas addressed in this course include: (a) transition policy, legislation and conceptual models, issues related to transitioning CLD youth in urban settings, (b) overview of best practice, (c) self-determination, and (d) family involvement. The objectives of this course address those areas specific to the needs of adolescents and young adults with disabilities.
Course Objectives:
Students will identify and define key conceptual foundations relating to transition.
Students will be able to describe historical and current transition models.
Students will identify and define key transition and civil rights legislation.
Students will be able to define transition and identify best and promising practices in all areas of transition.
Students will explore the impact of student and family involvement on transition planning.
LBS II: This is a required course for the Learning Behavior Specialist II in the areas of Transition Specialist and Multiple Disabilities Specialist. It is recommended for LBS II students enrolled in the Adaptation Specialist area.
Prerequisites: Course offered to Graduate ONLY
LBS II: SPED 513 – Educational Implications of Learners with Low-Incidence and Multiple Disabilities and admission to the LBS II Program or admission as a doctorate student or consent of the instructor.
ATLiS: Must apply and be admitted into ATLiS program as a part of one of the program’s cohorts.
